Bankroll Management and Unit Sizing
Bankroll Management and Unit Sizing
Here's an uncomfortable truth: most people who lose at sports betting don't lose because their picks are bad. They lose because they bet too much on any single game and go broke before their edge can play out. Bankroll management is the boring habit that fixes that — and it matters more than any pick.
Start with a bankroll
Your bankroll is money you've set aside specifically for betting — an amount you can afford to lose entirely without affecting your life. Not your rent, not your savings. Once it's set, you only bet from it, and you don't top it up emotionally after a loss.
Bet in units, not dollars
A unit is a fixed fraction of your bankroll — most disciplined bettors use 1%. With a $1,000 bankroll, one unit is $10. You size every bet in units, so your bets automatically shrink when you're cold and grow when you're hot, without you having to think about it.
- A normal bet: 1 unit.
- A pick you really like: maybe 2 units.
- You almost never want a single bet above 3–5% of your bankroll, no matter how sure you feel. Certainty is a feeling; variance is a fact.
Why flat betting wins
"Flat betting" — the same unit size every time — protects you from the two classic killers: chasing (doubling up to win back a loss) and going all-in on a "lock." There are no locks. Even a genuine 60% winner loses four in a row sometimes. Flat sizing means a cold streak dents your bankroll instead of ending it.
A simple plan
- Decide a bankroll you can lose.
- Set one unit at 1% of it.
- Bet 1–2 units per play, almost never more.
- Recalculate your unit every month or so as the bankroll changes.
How this fits FreezyPicks
Our picks come with a confidence tier (Strong, Lean, Split) and an edge number — useful inputs for deciding whether a play is worth 1 unit or 2, and which to skip entirely. But no pick changes the math above. The edge tells you whether to bet; bankroll management tells you how much — and the second one is what keeps you in the game long enough for the first to matter.
